Elementa is a virtual chemistry lab for WAEC students in Ghana. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect and why. If anything here is unclear, message us — the contact details are at the bottom.

What we collect

  • Account details: your name and a securely hashed password or PIN (we never store or see the actual one).
  • If you joined with a class code from your teacher, we do not ask for your phone number or your email address. You get a username like “ama.k7f3” instead, so we hold no way to contact you. If you forget your PIN, your teacher can set you a new one.
  • If you signed up on your own rather than through a school, your phone number — so a Mobile Money payment can be matched to your account. Teachers give an email address, to sign in and be contacted about approval.
  • Optionally, your school name, and whether you're a student or teacher.
  • Learning activity: which practicals you've done, your XP and scores, and answers you submit to assignments — so progress can be saved and, for students in a class, shared with your teacher.
  • If you join or create a class: your class membership, and — for teachers — the classes and assignments you set up.
  • If you contact us or report a problem: the message you send, and the page you were on when you sent it.
  • Basic technical information if something crashes (error messages and the page URL) — this helps us fix bugs, not to track you.
  • Usage analytics: which pages are visited and where people get stuck, so we can see what's confusing and improve the app. This is not linked to your account — we record that "a student reached step 4", never which student. The device identifier it uses is replaced every day, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next. Never sold or shared.
  • Which practicals you performed, and for how long, so your teacher can see whether you did the experiment they set. A teacher sees only their own class. We stop linking this to your name after a year.
  • Once payments are enabled: a record that a payment was made (amount, date, plan), processed through Paystack. We do not see or store your card or mobile money PIN — that happens entirely on Paystack's side.

Why we collect it

Only to run the service: to save your progress across visits and devices, to let teachers track their students' work, to enrol you correctly through class codes, and to process payment for paid plans once those are live.

Who we share it with

We don't sell data. It's shared only with the infrastructure that runs the app:

  • Neon — hosts our database.
  • Vercel — hosts the application.
  • Paystack — processes payments, once enabled. They handle your card/mobile money details directly; we never touch them.

A teacher can see the progress and submissions of students enrolled in their own class. Teachers cannot see students in classes they don't teach.

Students under 18

Many students using Elementa are secondary school students, some under 18. If you're a teacher or school registering students, please make sure this fits your own school's policy on classroom tools. If you're a parent or guardian with questions about your child's account, contact us — we're happy to help, including with deleting an account on request.

How long we keep it

We keep account data while your account is active. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data at any time — see contact details below.

Two things expire on their own, without you asking. Records of which practicals you performed stop being linked to your name after a year — the lesson data stays, your name comes off it. Usage analytics is deleted after six months.

Your rights

You can ask us, at any time, to: see what data we hold about you, correct anything that's wrong, or delete your account entirely. Just reach out — no form to fill in.

Security

Passwords are hashed, never stored in plain text. Traffic to the app is encrypted (HTTPS). No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable, standard precautions.

Changes to this policy

If this changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Elementa after a change means you accept the update.
